Valencia to Barcelona. 4 hour drive. It’s that simple really. Not when you are behind the wheel of the infamous moby dick! Having had no battery and constantly needing to roll start for the last few weeks has been fun. Combine that with the fact moby is severly allergic to the heat and it surely means a breakdown.

Yesterday was a scorcher of a day, hitting record tempreatures. One Thermometer showing 50 degrees. With that kind of heat we were forced to drive when the tempreatures cool in the late afternoon, which in Spain is around 8pm. With the electrical system on the brink, which means no, or very little headlights, there was no way we were going to make the 4 hour trip to Barcelona before the 10pm sunset.

We decided to pull over when our headlights were so flat they were useless, around 12pm, 170km from our destination.

Through our powers of deduction we we certain that the fanbelt was the cause of the problem. We had already had the battery checked, it was flat, but still fine. That means it was either the alternator or the fan belt. The fan belt was loose, we knew that for the wickedly high pitched screatching it makes anything above an idle. The alternator seemed to charge, if only just a little when it wasn’t screaching, which is at idle, which the cooling system can handle in this heat for all of 15 minutes.

Anyway we, well, I decided to pull over into a truckstop service station, with the intention of looking at the fan belt in the morning light. This seemed like a good idea, except when ever I try to fix something on this trip it seems to compount another problem!

This time it was a water hose that forms an intergral part of the cooling system. Tightenig the fanbelt was going fine, had the top bolt loosened, was tring to get to the bottom bolt, when I must have knocked the hose. Damn brittle rubber hose. I practically touched it and it cracked, sending water and coolant everywhere.

The cracks close proximity to the end of the hose meant i could theoretically cut the end off, put it back on and we will be ok. Wrong. After doing the repair, putting everything back together, ignoring the fanbelt tightening just putting back how it was, filling the water up, double check, all good. Except, I felt to see if the hose was watertight, touch… BAM! It split again!

That was the end of my patience! Always seeming to make things worse when I try to fix them I decided to give up, call a mobile mechanic, and never try repair the van again!

I dont think i have ever been so excited to see a museum, i was literally doubled over because i was about to wet myself in anticipation!
The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was on the top of my to do list ever since I had ever planned, no, thought about travelling. I guess my obsession came after watching a documentry on the works of Frank Gehry, the forms he produces, the method behind his creation, all seemed very foreign and exciting. I couldn’t wait to see what was arguably his finest work.

When you first see the shiny titanium clad structure you are definately agasp at it’s shape. With a straight surface not anywhere to be seen, yet pleantly of sharp obtuse angles it looks so unnatural, jutting out here and there , but at the same time the subtle curved survaces produce something so organic that, to put simply just works.

It’s hard to imagine Bilbao with out the influence of the Guggenheim, since it was put out to tender in 1991 the city has put in place measures to clean up the river that runs through the centre of town, created more parks and implemented more outstanding architectural structures. All with the aim of taking the city away from it’s redundant industrial past to it’s future as a great artistic city of the world.

Finally in the museum, you once again find yourself in a state of ore. The exterior theme is continued inside, curved surfaces, sharp lines, even the exterior titanium cladding flows through to inside the building, only now it’s accompioned by plaster and glass. The transparency of the glass is used in a way that provides the visitors a direct view of the river on one side, and the cityscape on the other, hence allowing the building to intergrate into the surrounding city landscape.

Within the exhibitions, both the permanent Bilbao collection and the temporary instalations, there were many things to like. Personally within the permanent exhibition I enjoyed Hommage a Tennessee by Yves Klein Blue, Robert Rauschenberg’s Barge, and Eduardo Chillida’s Advice to Space V.

With in the biggest gallery, the fish gallery as Gehry refers to It as, Richard Serra was commisioned to fill the space. Serra is a large scale steel artist and the work he produced for the guggenheim was amazing. Not only breathtaking but interactive too. Large torqued helical walls of steel that you could get dizzy in. Waves of steel that could make you feel enclosed, open, venreble, all in a matter of meters. Leaning walls in a helical structure that give a feeling similar to vertigo with a queesy stomach, and you find yourself subconciously leaning with the curve.
Listening to the vocals to accompiany his work explained among many things his thoughts on architecture vs sculpture. He seemed quite peturbed by modern architects receding to their work as sculptures. He notes that the major difference being that sculpture requires no understructure, where as architecture is ornament, just surface to serve as scene making.

Another fantastic artist was the Bombay born, London trained Anish Kapoor. His exhibition that was on display followed the distinct theme of creating art wihout the hand of the artist. From a large cannon that shot wax blocks against a wall, to a large rotating peice that made you believe it was churning red vasoline, pigment made structures that seem to burst from the walls and floor and interactive mirrors that made you the subject. But my favorite overall was his concrete prices that were created using commercial pastry machines, combined with a unique concrete process that was all controlled via a computer similar to a large CAD controlled rapid prototype machine, albeit larger and probably a lot messier.

After we had a fantastic time both inside and out of the museum we returned to find that the car had been broken into! Damn it’s a shit feeling, knowing that someone has been through your possesions, makes you feel like you’ve been violated. Fortunately for us nothing of importance was taken, a few valued items including cash and cameras, but things like passports, which were pulled out and left on the seats, were left behind. In a strange way i guess we can consider ourselves lucky because later on, while we were filing a report at the police station, we were informed that 3 other vans were broken into in the same street, the difference being they had all had smashed windows as a point of entry. Our drivers side lock was damaged which I guess is how they got into our van, but that was easy enough to fix ourselves.
It was a devastating end to what was a great day. The one positive out of this is that they didn’t take much and it will definately teach us to be more careful with what we leave in the van unattended!

The following is quotes and information that I took down durig the visit, not really all that interesting but useful nonetheless:
Material choice is personal. Steel 40 years
Sculpture vs architecture: “sculpture requires no understructure, it is it’s own structure.” architecture is, in the case of the Guggenheim “ornament, just surface to serve as scene making, nothing to do with the tectonic structural principals of it’s underpinning.”
“Form is there stucture.”

We ended up staying the night at the beach Arenal de Moris on a cliff overlooking the beach. By the time we got there, 2 am, and after a late night maccas session, we all crashed as soon as our heads hit the pillows. I set my alarm for half 8, because I was so excited for a morning surf. The morning only brought with it dissapointment. The wind was calm, there was swell, but no sandbars to shape the waves into anything but a close out. The dissapointment didn’t last long as I drove to the next beach around the point, Playa Vega. There we were greeted with a bevvy of 1-2 foot waves, all breaking consitently in three different spots along this long stretch of beach.
Epic morning surf, baked bean breakfast, van shower. We then hit up the closest town for supplies and to touch base with home. I was like a kid in a cake shop, It had been weeks since I had the chance to video skype with my lover! Spoke to Steph for nearly 2 hours although in reality we only spoke for no more than 5 minutes because we just spent the whole time looking at each other.
We plugged in our next destination, Bilbao, and hit the road. Our intention was to find a beach not to far from town to sleep and get another early surf. This search took us on some crazy little roads through some crazy little towns but throughout the entire trip today was some of the best scenery I have seen to date. Rolling green hills peirced with shards of sandstone that had been forced up to see the light of day many thousands of years ago. Sheer cliffs. Deep, cavernous, river bottomed valleys that harbour local villages and communities.

After some searching we decided on a Berria

I wasn’t expecting much, actually that’s a lie, I was expecting it to be a wind blown mess! Tom rushed off ahead of me and when he looked back with an ear to ear smile I knew we were on to something. What we had come across was sets of lovely left hand shore breaks.

I was out in the water until I was a blue, cold, shivvering mute and I couldn’t physically paddle anymore. Note to self: water in Spain is just as cold as home… Wetsuit is 100% required!

We left Lisbon, leaving Hilly and Steve to go to boom festival, and continued up the coast to meet up with the other van again. We joined them for the night at a campsite in Nazaré. When I say we ‘joined’ them, we free-camped in the car park and made full use of the facilities. Toilets, showers, coffee, even WiFi was available to us!
The following day we went to explore the town of Nazaré. If I had to sum it up in one word it would have to be narrow. Hundreds of Narrow apartments on lines upon lines of narrow streets. Everything was so compact that the houses were sometimes wider than they were deep. This is not to say that the place was ugly and cramped, quite the opposite actually. White rendered and sometimes decoratively tiled buildings, red terracotta rooftiles, cobblestone streets, all essential ingredients for a quaint little town.

A cable car up a steep hill gave a lookout from the cliffs that form a point that stretches out into the ocean, and that provide a picturesque backdrop to an already picturesque town. In places the lip of the cliff actually overhangs the wall of the cliff, looking over gave you an incredible felling of vertigo.

We drive at night to stop the van from over heating, which is good because you dont waste the days driving but on the downside you cant really see much in the moonlight. Tonight, on our trip to Nazare we passed through a town by the name of Chiquita which I would have loved to have seen by day. The main road by which we were travelling started it decent into the town via a long windy road flanked by a combination of plantation pines and open pastures. Once in town the road narrowed even further and started winding through a leafy village who’s double story houses with morroccan tiled facades were on the roads edge. Without footpaths the people of this town would have literally walked out of their front doors onto the main road.
The moonlight gave only just enough light for me to see the major details of the town. I’m sure the light of day would have revealed more detail throughout the town. Maybe it’s best that the romantisism of the faint moonlight let my imagination create the finer details?

3 days post the planned meeting with dave (or dinga as he is otherwise known) and zoe, and after getting the nick-name ‘the tomorrow guys’ for our inability to leave lagos and meet our rendesvous deadlines, we finally met up with them near Cascais. We met them at their campsite just before sundown. The weather was refreshingly chill for the usual hot portugese nights with tom sitting in a sleeping bag and the rest of us donning jumpers. We enjoyed a good meal of burritos washed down with a a few cold cervecias while dave, zoe and elise warmed our hearts with their travel stories from exit festival, croatia and their trip along the medeteranian coast. After eating and drinking our fill we returned to the van, which we parked opposite the caravan park, enjoying all the facilities of the campsite without paying a cent!
After a goodnights kip we enjoyed last nights leftovers, before hitting the severely wind blown beaches (think washing machine) for a severely uneventful surf.

Now all that is left is to wait for nightfall to bring cooler tempretures so we can head to Lisbon next to meet up with Shannon for her birthday on Saturday night.

Biss dann…

Because Tom and I purcased boards the day before we were really keen to hit the water, but we awoke to a mess of wind storms and no swell. Good for the numerous kite boarders but not us…Needless to say we moved on quickly

Many people say that one you get into Lagos you find it very hard to get out. In so many respects I agree with this because it’s a vibrant beach side city with a non stop night life. The only thing I can fault it on is that it’s so overrun by tourists, Australian tourists, that you could almost be convinced that you never left home.
Lagos’ narrow old city streets are still to this day littered with rellics of a by gone era, old city walls and gates, squares and fountains dotted amongst the houses, even an old sea-side fort that you could imagine would have warded off it’s fair share of Spanish pirates. All this unfortunately gets lost, or more likely people are blind to it because Lagos is known more for it’s alcoholism, it’s Australian bars, and it’s fishbowls than it’s history. Here is not to say that I didn’t partake in the partying, I did, but doing it night after night gets old very quickly.
I found myself asking where are the people who live in this town? Where do they eat? What are their cuisines delicacies? Where do they go out, if at all they do? We did find some good bars to go out, we even played beer pong. We found some good food too! Odeon was a simple little cafe that had good food and amazing coffee milkshakes, 3 monkeys diner did amazing dinner for 5€, think ribs, sheppards pie, honey mustard chicken. amazing value! But so driven toward tourists that there was no hint of any local flavour. Don’t get me wrong, I all for tourists, hell I am one, but my major gripe with Lagos was that the city is so driven and marketed toward making Australian tourists feel homely that they have created a little monster in which the tourists and locals lead completely seperate, non intergrated lives.

It is a perfect city if your an Australian tourist and want to hang out with other Australian tourists, go to Australian bars and eat Australian food.
